At Activate Learning — The Leys College (OX4 6HN), WEMPOWERED CIC organise after‑school club Oxford Girls Who Code funded by Oxford City Council, which continues to grow in confidence, creativity, and team-building skills of the girls. Meeting every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month from 6:00–7:30pm, the girls are steadily building their coding skills while enjoying the process of problem‑solving together.

Each girl has been regular and punctual, showing dedication to the club along their family while usually mum brings the girls. Each girl now has her student card and learner ID, giving them authentic access to college resources and facilities.

We are delighted to share that the girls have successfully completed their first team project: a Basketball game built in Scratch.

  • Each learner approached the challenge in her own way, adding unique touches.
  • Features included multiple players, scoring systems, and music to make the game interactive.
  • Beyond finishing the project, the girls truly enjoyed the process of learning, experimenting, and sharing ideas.

In our most recent class, we began exploring the block version of Python, Edublock. The girls learned how to import Turtle graphics and create different geometrical patterns. Their homework challenge is to design a traditional fantasy home drawing — the kind many of us sketched in childhood, complete with imaginative details. It includes a triangle, parallelogram, a rectangle and a square with squares enclosed inside to show a window.

The journey from Scratch to Python is an exciting leap. By starting with visual, block‑based coding, the girls are building confidence before moving into text‑based programming. Each project is designed to be reflective, age‑appropriate, and fun, while steadily introducing GCSE‑relevant skills.

We are thrilled with their progress and look forward to sharing more milestones in the coming months.

Thank you to all the parents and community members for supporting the Oxford Girls Who Code initiative. Together, we are empowering young girls to see coding not just as a subject, but as a creative tool for expression and problem‑solving.
